Crank the hand turbine for four minutes and you’ll produce enough power for 10-15 minutes of music, news and weather. Or simply charge it in the sun using the built-in solar panel. You can also use the mini USB cable to charge the FRX2’s built-in rechargeable battery.
To charge your smartphone, simply plug it into the USB port. Power will automatically “dump charge” to your phone, just like plugging into the wall.

The Eton AM/FM Weather Radio provides emergency backup for those moments when keeping in contact with the outside world count most.
This small device serves as an AM/FM/WB analog radio with direct access to NOAA weather. And take it from one who's been there, knowing when to take cover can be a life saver. Add to that that knowing when to surface again really matters at the time.
The small radio holds a good charge, but it can also be hand cranked or solar powered. While none of us expects to be without power for an extended period, it can happen and it's good to have a device that will continue to work. The sound quality is adequate, and to be honest, any static encountered is more a NOAA reality than an Eton failure.
The LED flashlight and smart phone charger provide the icing on the cake. The light is bright and easy to use.
The Eton radio is small enough to keep in the glove compartment of the car, in that emergency box we should all have, or in a backpack when camping. And it may just be a lifesaver.

In addition to being a very small, usable weather radio, this has a built in flashlight; radio; and USB charger. What's really neat and unusual about this radio is that it can be both solar powered and HAND cranked (really useful!). Keep in mind that it takes about 10 minutes of winding to get 20 minutes of radio... so it's not real efficient, but it's definitely very friendly to survivalists.
I am keeping it on hand for those times that we have to get into the basement for a tornado warning... and the main reason I chose this radio is so that we would be able to quickly link to the local weather radio when we are camping or traveling across the country... I've always felt a bit at risk when there was bad weather around and now I don't have to, even if I forget to charge it... just crank away and quickly listen in to the weather and you can keep your family safe! DEFINITELY recommend!

I currently have two Eton American Red Cross Microlink (ARCFR160R)hand crank radios for my car and for home. I saw the Eton Hand Turbine FRX2 and just had to have it as it has a smartphone charger port. The other two have regular cell phone charger ports and I needed one for my smartphone.
But I found out that the Eton FRX2 is just a little it smaller than the other ones I own and the quality of the sound of the radio is a lot better too. The FRX2 also has a mini USB cable that could come in handy in case of an emergency.
I now own three of these radios and I could not be happier with the radios. I plan on keeping the FRX2 in my vehicle and the other one for home and for work. For the price of these radios and the quality of the workmanship and the quality of the sound, you just can't beat it. Every household and vehicle should have one in case of an emergency.

I am very happy with this weather radio (it's our second one by Eton). I think it would be hard not to be (unless you have four hundred dollar expectations on a forty dollar product) because all the features it lists are legit and it really performs well. If I have an emergency, I want something that can keep working without batteries (because batteries run out, solar and my ability to crank do not.) Considering the price range and the amount of features this offers (and delivers) I think this is a great weather radio and a good value on one.

The internal battery is a Ni-MH battery. Under normal use conditions the battery can be charged and discharged 500 times or more. However, if the battery is left to sit completely discharged for more than a couple of months the chemistry in the battery will be altered permanently causing the battery to lose the ability to store a significant amount of charge. It is best for you to service your device regularly, meaning that they should take the radio out and charge it completely using the USB cable at least once every 6 months, or better, once every quarter.
When solar charging the radio, place it into direct sunlight (not through a window, screen, in artificial light or in shade) for 8 to 10 hours to get a full charge, after which it should play for about 4 to 5 hours, at low volume.
Crank charging it for 90 seconds will allow it to play for 15 to 20 minutes, at low volume. If you crank for a longer period, it will play longer.
If it loses power such that the radio no longer plays, the light may still shine for a couple of hours because it draws far less current than the radio.
To charge the FR160, turn the crank for 90 seconds and it will play for 15-20 minutes, at low volume. Or, put it into direct sunlight (not through a window, screen, in artificial light or shade) with the sun shining directly onto the solar panel, for 8 to 10 hours, after which the battery will be fully charged and will allow the radio to play for 4 to 5 hours, at low volume.
